Why We Built MayaAI: A Nurse's Answer to Healthcare's Missed Calls
I'm Kotresh Aradyamath, a Registered Nurse working full-time as a nurse in a hospital. Outside my shifts, my wife Sushmitha and I have spent the last year building MayaAI — an AI voice receptionist for medical, dental, and allied health practices. This is the story of why.
The problem I couldn't stop noticing
On the ward, I kept seeing the same thing play out. A patient starts bowel prep the night before a colonoscopy, and by morning she's nauseous, has loose bowels, and is frightened something has gone wrong. She calls the clinic. A nurse or admin staff member has to stop what they're doing to explain that this is completely normal. It happens again with the next patient, and the next.
Zoom out, and the pattern is everywhere. Patients who can't reach their clinic after hours or on weekends either delay care or end up in an already-stretched emergency department. Reception staff are stretched thin trying to answer every call during the day, on top of everything else they do.
And in aged care, the same gap becomes something more painful. A family member calls about their loved one, and the call simply doesn't get returned — not because anyone stopped caring, but because no one had the time. Sushmitha, who also works in health, has seen this side of the problem closely: families left wondering, when a returned call would have been enough.
What we built
MayaAI is an AI voice receptionist that answers and books patient calls 24/7 — including after hours and weekends — for medical, dental, and allied health practices. It integrates directly with the practice management systems clinics already use, including Halaxy, Cliniko, and Best Practice, so there's no extra setup required.
But we didn't want to stop at reception. MayaAI also makes pre- and post-operative follow-up calls, tailored to a surgeon's exact instructions. Before a patient starts bowel prep, MayaAI can call to explain exactly what to expect. After surgery, it can check in again — helping catch early signs of complications, and helping patients feel like someone is genuinely looking out for them, not just processing their booking.
MayaAI isn't built to replace reception staff. It's built to make sure no call, and no patient, ever falls through the cracks — so the people at the front desk can spend their time on the patients standing in front of them.
Built without shortcuts
Neither of us came from a software background. I taught myself to build and integrate MayaAI around my full-time nursing shifts, entirely self-funded, with no outside investment. It's been built nights, weekends, and whatever time was left over — because we believed this problem was worth solving properly.
That persistence is starting to show results. Our first client has been a paying customer for nearly two months, with over 200 patient calls answered and zero missed. We exhibited at the Digital Health Festival in Melbourne alongside far larger, better-funded health-tech companies, and we were recently featured in the Coast Community News. We're now in active conversations with a neurosurgeon's clinic and a GP practice in Muswellbrook, expanding our reach into the Hunter region.
Where we're headed
We want MayaAI to be the leading AI voice receptionist provider in Australia — not because we're the biggest, but because we understand, as clinicians ourselves, what genuinely matters to patients and their families. We want to be the ones who prove that AI can help healthcare feel more personal, not less: making clinics reachable for every patient, at any hour, and making sure no family calling an aged care facility is ever left without an answer.
If you're a practice owner, a clinician, or someone who has felt the frustration of an unanswered call, we'd love to show you what MayaAI can do.
